Air pollution from household products is cutting people’s lives short

August 27, 2021 By Staff Writer

We know that pollution is bad for our health, but new research suggests that close to a million people dies every year prematurely due to harmful particles being released into the air by common household products. Culprits are typically cleaning products, various paints and weed suppressing substances. These products release aerosols which can transform and become more harmful than in their primary state. It is also important that these aerosols are not limited to indoor spaces and can migrate to the outside environment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Inhaling any type of particle, especially PM 2.5 can cause health effects to humans such as reduced lung fuction and the development of lung cancer.
  • The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences did a study that shows VCP emissions play a big role in the formation of PM 2.5 in Los Angeles.
  • Proper regulations of VCPs and emissions from transportation vehicles need to happen if we want to prevent premature deaths that are caused by ASOAs.

“Researchers attribute up to 900,000 premature deaths every year to a dangerous component of air particle pollution found in paints, pesticides, and cleaning supplies.”

FDA Issues Warning About Illnesses, Deaths Linked to Midwestern Pet Foods

August 25, 2021 By Staff Writer

The recent warning by the Federal and Drug Administration concerns the pet food that contains harmful ingredients responsible for deaths of more than 100 pets, primarily cats and dogs. The on-site inspection found that at the point of manufacturing aflatoxin levels were extremely high. This toxin is created by mold and grows on certain grains. Inspection of other sites found similar issues. The company was found to be non-compliant with federal regulations and laws governing food production.

Key Takeaways:

  • An inspection of a manufacturing plant in Oklahoma showed that the SportMiX High Energy Dog food had high levels of aflatoxin.
  • Aflatoxin is produced by mold and can grow on grains that are typically used in pet foods. Aflatoxin causes illnesses and sometimes death in pets.
  • In January, Midwestern Pet Foods recalled those products and all products that contained corn which were made at the Chickasha plant.

“The FDA issued a public warning on Tuesday about contaminated pet food sold by Midwestern Pet Foods, which could be linked with more than 220 illnesses and 130 deaths among dogs and cats.”

Dementia: Expert recommends five unique activities to improve brain health

August 21, 2021 By Staff Writer

Psychologist Lee Chambers has advice on five unique activities to improve brain health and stave off dementia. One of the best things to do is to fall in love, although this may not be easy to control. Dr. Rachel Allen adds that socialization with friends and family promotes brain health. Puzzles, such as jigsaws and Sudoku, can improve cognitive function, and learning a new language has benefits as well. Physical activities such as dancing can improve brain health, as they require coordination and the memorization of a routine. Meditation is an activity that can regenerate our brain and help us sleep. On the negative side, watching too much TV has been associated with lower cognitive function.

Key Takeaways:

  • The positive emotions involved when falling in love are great for your brain.
  • Psychologist Lee Chambers mentions jigsaws and Sudoku as healthy brain activities, as well as learning a new language.
  • He further says that dancing strengthens our minds as well as our bodies.

“Chartered counselling psychologist, Dr Rachel Allan, added that socialisation is key in promoting brain health too, which includes friendships and time with family.”

The four best vitamins for better skin – easy ways to get healthier, clearer skin

August 19, 2021 By Staff Writer

Vitamins are critically important to keep the human body alive and functional, and there are four vitamins in particular that are ideal for making one’s skin significantly healthier. Vitamin D, which is naturally obtained from a person’s exposure to sunlight, aids skin cells in regeneration. Vitamin C minimizes wrinkles due to its role in the body’s synthesis of collagen, while Vitamin E helps the body prevent and heal skin damage caused by UV radiation emitted by the sun. Vitamin K may be able to help remedy a variety of skin conditions such as scars and dark spots, though research of Vitamin K is currently relatively limited.

Key Takeaways:

  • Your body needs vitamins, and taking vitamins can help you with your skin and more.
  • Vitamin D is great for the skin and you can get some simply by going outside.
  • Vitamin C keeps your skin looking young, and Vitamin E keeps it from getting too dry.

People living in areas with more air pollution should wear face masks to prevent dementia, scientists say

August 9, 2021 By Staff Writer

It may be that the pandemic and it’s commensurate strictures, specifically the need to wear facemasks for prolonged periods, has brought us at least the benefit of extra data. Scientists have undoubtedly been monitoring mask usage and it’s potential side effects over weeks and months. One rather alarming revelation has emerged that brings concern. This is the potential effect of not wearing a face-shielding and air-filtering device in highly polluted areas. Researchers have discovered that the much maligned, albeit useful, mask may have uses beyond preventing Covid-19 and other deadly pathogens from causing infection. Data shows that areas that have higher amounts of air pollutants create a greater risk for residents developing cognition issues at some point of their life. Nor does the area have to be industry heavy. Merely living near a shopping mall as opposed to rural locale can up a resident’s potential for developing dementia later in life. While it’s been known for some time that polluted air particles can promote long-term damage to the heart and lungs, these findings are more recent and focus on dementia specifically. The data was culled and examined from studies done twenty and thirty years ago. It was the researcher’s assessment after careful study that a mere microgram per cubic meter of difference for air pollutants between resident as enough to significantly increase said resident’s capacity to incur brain deficits later in life. Because many brain issues only come to complete fruition over time, this data was not available before. With access to data that shows changes over decades, scientists can now view this alarming trend. In doing so, they also indicate the potential efficacy of using masks in areas of high pollution.

Key Takeaways:

  • It has already been proven that living in areas with air pollution has negative consequences on the heart and respiratory areas of the human body.
  • It has now been proven that people living in areas with just a single microgram per cubic meter in addition to a similarily polluted area gives a person 16% higher risk of developing a brain disease.
  • The studies conducted were analyzed by studying people who developed dementia living in polluted areas examining pollution levels over the course of years prior to the diagnosis.

“Previous studies have shown long term exposure to air pollution can be hazardous to health leading to conditions that affect the lungs and heart.”

Does wearing a hat cause hair loss? Why you should avoid pressure on your head

August 7, 2021 By Staff Writer

Losing hair is something that many people obsess over, and that is quite understandable. Hair can be a source of pride and a unique feature of our person. There are many misconceptions about propensity for hair loss. The truth is that it is mostly tied to genetics, but there are certain activities we conduct that may speed up hair loss. Despite some popular beliefs, hats do not contribute to hair loss and there are no research data to show that wearing a head covering can contribute to baldness.

Key Takeaways:

  • Men who inherit the affected X chromosome from their mother have a two-thirds chance of balding.
  • Experts aren’t convinced wearing a hat contributes to hair loss in any meaningful way.
  • However, constant pressure on the head through hair bands, a tight ponytail, or braids can accelerate hair loss.

“Balding is most common in men, who experience male pattern baldness, but some women may experience female pattern baldness in their lifetime.”

Vaping marijuana is WORSE than using regular e-cigarettes, claims study

August 2, 2021 By Staff Writer

A new study from the University of Michigan reveals the dangers of vaping marijuana. Compared to those who vape nicotine, smoke nicotine cigarettes, or smoke pot, adolescents who vape marijuana are twice as likely to suffer respiratory problems. The study looked at 12 to 17 year-olds and whether they reported wheezing in the chest while sleeping, speaking, or exercising. The research team members were quick to add that their findings do not mean that e-cigarettes, traditional cigarettes, or smoked cannabis aren’t also damaging to one’s health.

Key Takeaways:

  • This study doesn’t mean vaping nicotine, smoking cigarettes or marijuana aren’t bad for you, they just aren’t as bad as vaping weed for lung injuries.
  • The researchers believed coming into the study that e-cigarettes would be the product most associated with severe symptoms.
  • The team studied a group of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 years old and they were asked to talk about their use of these items for the last 30 days and their lifetime.

“They found that adolescents who vaped marijuana were about twice as likely to report respiratory symptoms, like wheezing, in the chest, which is a sign of lung damage.”
