The camera in the loo that spots bowel cancer

August 2, 2021 By Staff Writer

A small, high-tech camera that clips onto the toilet can be used to detect signs of bowel cancer. The camera scans stools in the bowl for signs of blood, then transmits data to an app on the user’s smartphone. The app uses AI to provide results within minutes. Based on initial testing, accuracy is up to 90 percent. In the UK, about 16,000 people a year die of bowel cancer. The current method of testing involves sending a stool sample in for analysis, but this is unpleasant and often inaccurate. OutSense, the maker of the camera device, hopes to seek approval for it within the next two years.

Key Takeaways:

  • Resembling a toilet freshener, the device uses cutting-edge imaging techniques to scan stools in the bowl for traces of blood — a sign of the disease.
  • If warning signs are identified, more detailed investigations may be recommended such as a colonoscopy, where a thin, flexible probe with a camera on the end is used to look for signs of cancer.
  • But some people find the testing process unpleasant and research suggests the kits only identify 70 per cent of tumours.

“The earlier bowel cancer is caught, the greater the chances of survival. More than 90 per cent of patients diagnosed at the earliest stage (stage one) are alive after five years, compared to just 10 per cent of those diagnosed at stage four (when the cancer has spread), according to Cancer Research UK.”

Pork vs Beef vs Chicken: Why BEEF Wins by a Landslide over Chicken and Pork for Health Benefits and Environmental Benefits

August 2, 2021 By Staff Writer

There’s an intense discussion going on in global community about health benefits and environmental impact of eating various types of meat. We have been told that red meats are really not healthy, but also that environmental impact of raising cattle is quite significant. The comparison is usually unfair, because most of the chicken and pork consumed in the US are raised in operations where feed is almost all soy and grains, and animals are being raised indoors, with no exposure to sun or fresh air.

Key Takeaways:

  • First of all, the vast majority of chicken and pork in the US are raised in indoor operations where the animals never see any sunlight or fresh air.
  • Beef fat is also one of the richest sources of a particular healthy saturated fat called stearic acid, which studies show reduces your appetite.
  • So although grain-finished feedlot beef is inferior both environmentally and nutritionally to grass-finished beef, it’s still better than most chicken and pork.

“I’m going to show you why BEEF is actually significantly more nutritionally healthy for us (AND environmentally healthy and sustainable too) than any type of chicken or pork.”

When being too fit can be BAD for you

August 2, 2021 By Staff Writer

We’ve been conditioned to think that being fit have all the benefits and none of negative effects, but you may reach the level of fitness that leads to some undesirable side effects. This is especially true for taller people. New research finds that the combination of being very fit and tall can lead to a cardiovascular condition called atrial fibrillation. Over 1.5 million Brits are affected by this condition, which causes the heart to have irregular rhythm and increased heart rate.

Key Takeaways:

  • Can you ever be too fit? It may sound unlikely, but actually you can have too much of a good thing when it comes to exercise, especially if you are tall.
  • Risk factors include high blood pressure, heart valve problems, blocked arteries, excessive alcohol consumption and an overactive thyroid, all of which make the heart work harder.
  • The fitter you are, the more likely you are to feel symptoms, as it brings performance levels down, says Professor Sharma.

“Left untreated, the condition can cause heart failure and stroke. It is triggered by irregular electrical impulses in the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) which disturb its rhythm.”

“Menopause” – The Contra Aging Technique To Help Men Stay Younger

July 23, 2021 By Staff Writer

If you are a male over 40 and are susceptible to erection problems, rigidity, soreness and muscle weakness, stress and anxiety and depressive disorders, or temperature intolerance, you could be suffering from Andropause.

Andropause is a disorder caused by the deficit of bodily hormones, specifically androgenic hormone or testosterone. Its effect can be severe, although not as noticible as the Menopause for women. It really is exciting that hormone substitute is popular with women but rarely talked about for males.

The decrease in hormonal levels for both sexes presents an adverse influence on your health. Starting around 25 years of age, DHEA and other male growth hormone start to decline. With falling hormones, it is actually harder to preserve muscles, you need more exercise to get the same results and that’s not always a good idea. Your skin can start to sag and body fat actually starts to bind into more dense layers across the spine and abdominal area. Your Stamina is also affected and exercise resistance takes place. Osteoporosis is seen in women and also happens to men to a lesser degree. This may result in bone injuries from falls as the bone density can decrease. Wrinkles can also occur because of a male growth hormone deficit. Libido is also. These changes are a direct result of Menopause and Andropause.

Hormonal supplementation continues to be a popular option for women and can be used for many years with medical supervision. In Contra–Ageing treatment, it is though that by keeping hormonal levels to that of a 25-30 year old can provide substantial overall health advantage. It is necessary to check your hormone levels regulalry to ensure optimium health and adjust the dosage if required.

Bioidentical hormone replacement is the optimum form of hormone replacement as this mimics the compounds and levels of hormones that occur naturally in our body. Normal therapy uses things such as horse urine and can have hormone levels 2000 times higher than occurs normally.

The decline in testosterone comes from multiple causes and treatment shouldbe carefully guided. Aromatase (an enzyme that converts Male growth hormone into Estradiol increases as we get older. This boosts free oestrogens and decreases the free Male growth hormone. Prostate malignancy is linked with higher levels of oestrogens. Aromatase inhibitors, for example chrysin, nettle extract, and Arimidex can inhibit aromatase. Testicular atrophy contributes to lowered androgenic hormone or testosterone generation.

A training course of therapy with HCG energizes testicular growth and may improve Male growth hormone generation. An all round mineral, vitamin, and antioxidant supplement as well as a proper diet can help to improve testosterone production.

DHEA and melatonin supplementation can also boost free testosterone. A diet regime that also includes a substantial amount of beans, specifically soy, is helpful in supplying the necessary foundations for our physiques to produce these chemicals. Keeping cholesterol levels within normal ranges is also crucial for hormone activity. Testosterone replacement can be achieved using creams, capsules or perhaps injection.

Products containing natural male growth hormone are well ingested through the pores and skin, sidestepping having to be processed by the liver, and are easy for our bodies to utilise, and are preferable to supplements. There have bene concerns raised that testosterone substitute may well worsen benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). If you have a prostrate problem, then supplementation is best avoided.

With correct supplementation, you can expect to restore muscle tissue, improve bone density, increase vigour, improve libido, lessen your risks for a number of cancer as well as Alzheimer’s improving your quality of life.

What Form Of Curcumin Is Best For Arthritis?

February 5, 2021 By Staff Writer

Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric and is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Now researchers have found curcumin may also help underlying causes of inflammation and reduce damage to bone and cartilage. Traditionally it has been used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat arthritis.  Several recent studies show that curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties and modifies immune system responses. A 2006 study showed turmeric was more effective at preventing joint inflammation than reducing joint inflammation.

What is it

Curcumin is a yellow-coloured powder ground from the roots of the lily-like turmeric plant. It is a common ingredient in curry powder. The turmeric plant grows in India and Indonesia and is related to the ginger family.

Medicinal Uses of Curcumin

The spice turmeric, made from the Curcuma longa plant, has been a traditional part of Indian medicine or Ayurveda for thousands of years. Practitioners recommend the ground root of the plant for headaches, colds, fever, kidney disease and many other ailments. Turmeric is also applied to the skin to help heal bruises, cuts and insect bites. The active components of turmeric are curcuminoids, with curcumin the most abundant of these. Turmeric or isolated curcumin may help prevent or relieve inflammation, the underlying cause of the pain of arthritis.

Interestingly, Turmeric is sometimes referred to as the “Killer of Worms”. Ayurvedic medicine has long used Turmeric to kill parasites without the toxic side effects of prescription drugs. Some forms of arthritis and inflammation are related to parasites and this is a useful benefit of taking turmeric.

How to Consume

It is taken orally in capsules or spice. For capsules, typically 400 mg to 600 mg three times per day is the standard dosage or 0.5 g to 1 g of powdered root up to 3 g per day.

Curcumin is generally well tolerated, although a small number of people may experience gastric upset at higher dosages. This can be helped by reducing the dose or eating this with food.

Turmeric is not well absorbed by our digestive system. In its normal form, it needs to be taken for a very long period of time to make a difference. Studies have shown that India has some of the lowest rates of conditions such as Alzheimer’s. This has been attributed to the almost universal use of Turmeric in Indian cuisine. Over time, this builds up the protective properties of Turmeric.

Most people are looking for faster relief and don’t want to build this up over a period of years.

The Most Effective Ways To Consume Turmeric and Curcumin

Fortunately, a number of different ways have been found to boost the bioavailability of Turmeric.

  1. Black Pepper. One of the earliest enhancers is Black Pepper. There is also a proprietary formula called Peperine which is more effective than black pepper alone. This is not the optimal enhancer as it works by blocking a liver enzyme which allows the turmeric to be better absorbed. However, this enzyme is there for a reason! Several studies have suggested that this can have negative health impacts if used regularly.
  2. BCM95. This is a proprietary blend of Curcumin plus the oils from the turmeric plant that is standardised to increase its effectiveness. Studies have shown that it is better absorbed and stays in the bloodstream for much longer, up to 8 hours without needing to add other absorption enhancers.
  3. Cooking, The active ingredients in Turmeric are released during cooking making it easier to absorb. However, it is important not to overdo this as excess heating can reduce its beneficial properties.
  4. Quercitin. This is a flavonoid that combines with Turmeric to make it work better. Adding peppers or Quercitin powder to your cooking can make a big difference.
  5. Fat. Certain fats seem to improve availability. One of the easiest is adding a drop of olive oil. This helps to absorb this into the bloodstream and also allows it to pass the blood-brain barrier improving the benefits for your brain. Olive oil should always be the Extra Virgin as this is cold-pressed. The other type uses heat which destroys much of the benefit of olive oil.
  6. Ginger. This works in a similar fashion to Piperine but seems to not have the same health concerns. This is readily and cheaply available making it a great addition.
  7. Encapsulation. Some formulas coat Turmeric with oil or an emulsifier to let it better pass through the stomach into the bloodstream.

It is well worth reading reviews to check other people’s results with Curcumin supplements. It is also worth experimenting to see which works best for you.

Fish Oil Contamination – Just what is polluting your Fish Oil and Omega 3?

January 18, 2021 By Staff Writer

“Although taking fish oil or cod liver oil has been seen as essential, to get you omega 3, study after study has shown that these supplements are contaminated by harmful toxins such as mercury and dioxins.  However, a new study has shown that high street brands are free from these toxins, so what exactly is going on?”Omega 3 is an Essential Fatty Acid (EFA). These are nutrients that are critical for our bodies to function properly. Although they have a range of functions within our bodies, they are of key importance to our joints. They help to keep our joints functioning and pain-free.

Reports Finding Fish Oil Contamination

European countries have long had more restrictive laws governing their food production and distribution, as well as regulations on different healthcare supplements, than their American counterparts.  This is probably why the majority of studies published citing contamination as a concern in fish oil consumption has been conducted in a European Country.

The Food Standards Agency out of the UK sited such contamination in 2006, as did the Food Safety Authority of Ireland.  Proponents of these studies argue that the majority of studies conducted that result in “proof” of contamination have been done utilizing fish oil in solid or powdered form.

Why do you need omega 3?
It has been proven that Omega 3 is essential for brain development and function based upon the brains need for DHA and EPA to generate growth.  Mothers with sufficient intake of DHA and EPA while pregnant gave birth to higher weight babies, were more likely to carry to full term, and their offspring often tested higher on IQ tests once they became of school age.

Fish oil has been found to be beneficial in some psychological ways as well.  It can reduce depression and delay the onset of Schizophrenia.  The oils lower overall aggression by aiding in the neuronal growth of the frontal cortex.

Omega 3 is an antiatherosclerotic, antithrombotic, antiarrhythmic and improves endothelial function.  It also helps to lower cholesterol, blood pressure and triglycerides.
There have been some recent studies that have suggested that the daily consumption of fish oil can have anti-cancer effects, particularly when in reference to breast and ovarian cancer. Its function in joint health has been long established.

So why are the new studies finding NO contamination?
Present studies that have more recently been published from testing centres at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as the National Medical Services of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, have discovered NO significant values of contamination in over 40 brands of fish oil supplements.  These recent studies have been mainly conducted in America, which has long been known for not having as high of testing standards or regulations as their European counterparts.

There has been an increase in the number of companies that are now voluntarily participating in the distilling process of fish oil.  This is most likely in response to a decrease in fish oil sales due to the fear of mercury contamination.

Fish with significantly lower levels of mercury are being used more frequently now.  These fish are also being caught in waters surrounding less industrial nations which means that their waters are less contaminated hence resulting in lower levels of mercury.

Does distilling reduce beneficial properties?
Molecular distillation of fish oil may reduce some beneficial properties of omega 3.  It has long been known that once omega 3’s hit a certain temperature point, the chemical compound changes which make the component hard if not impossible for one’s body to use and process.

Better sources:

Krill
Dr Mercola and other well-known omega 3 proponents have recently been pushing the switch to Krill in order to obtain the daily dose of omega 3’s.  This switch is justifiable on many levels.  Krill happens to be more sustainable than fish.  Legitimate studies have not yet been conducted to determine the predicted sustainability of krill but it is estimated to be twice as high as fish’s current projection of 40 years.

Krill is naturally high in antioxidants and therefore does not require additional supplements to be taken with it.  It provides DHA and EPA and the provided EPA is actually in the form of a double chain phospholipid structure which in turn makes them more absorbable in the human body.

Other vegetarian options that can be used in place of fish oil and krill include algae.  After all, this is where the fish obtain their beneficial stockpiles of omega 3’s anyways.

Swollen Knee Treatment: Reduce Swelling Quickly – Knee Pain Explained

December 19, 2020 By Staff Writer

Knee swelling can be caused by injuries or chronic condition, but regardless of the cause, it is almost always painful. It is a sign that there’s a fluid excess in the area close to your knee joint. Knowing what led to it is important, but before finding out, it is even more critical to get the swelling go down. Fortunately, there are several treatments you can apply. Compression bandages is simple and quite effective, especially for those looking to avoid taking medication. Elevating your knee can also help.

Key Takeaways:

  • A swollen knee usually happens because there is excess fluid in or around the knee joint.
  • You sometimes will see a swollen knee if you have an injury to one of the knee structure or if you have a medical condition.
  • When the knee gets swollen, it’s harder to treat the problem because the swelling needs to go down to identify the issue.

“Tubigrip evenly distributes pressure around the knee which helps to both push fluid out of the knee joint and stop excess fluid flooding in to the joint, which is why it is such as good swollen knee treatment tool.”

Swollen Knee: Causes & Treatment – Knee Pain Explained

December 17, 2020 By Staff Writer

There are a few different causes for a swollen knee, which involves fluid building up in or around the knee joint. Usually you will see a swollen knee come along with an injury. However, there are some cases where a knee can get swollen due to an underlying condition rather than an injury. To treat a swollen knee, you want to use ice and compression. You also can use pain medication to ease the pain and keeping the leg elevated helps as it draws fluid away from the joint.

Key Takeaways:

  • Knee swelling can happen very fast or it can happen gradually. A swollen knee simply means there is fluid around the knee joint or inside it.
  • You usually will see a swollen knee if it has been injured although some people just have underlying knee problems without injury.
  • If you are injured and your knee swells up instantly, that usually points to a ligament tear, a meniscus tear or a bone fracture.

“Knee swelling after an injury is normally profuse and the knee balloons up. It will feel tense and very sore and is often accompanied by bruising, although that may take longer to develop.”

Do Knee Sleeves Help With Knee Pain?

November 29, 2020 By Staff Writer

In this video, we are going to look at when a knee sleeve can be useful to stop knee pain and the various types.

Video Transcript

Your knees are one of the most vulnerable parts of your body.

Any injuries can range from being annoying through to completely stopping your life.

Knee injuries can be caused by a range of causes from inherited health problems, through injury, or your immune system being overactive, through to simply getting older.

Severe pain requires expert help and appropriate treatment to address the cause of your knee pain and to minimise the pain.

According to research published in the Journal of Strength and Condition research in 2012, mild to moderate pain can be helped via the use of knee sleeves.
These offer light assistance and the compression helps to increase circulation aiding the healing process.

They can also help to reduce the time you need to recover following your workout.

In addition, they can also be extremely useful when you are recovering from injury. Depending on your exact cause, they can help with stabilising your knee joint to avoid moving your knee beyond its natural limits. It may also help with maintaining your balance.

Another further benefit, was that mild compression can help to reduce pain. A study by Arthritis Research and Therapy in 2017 reported that they help reduce pain and help with a lack of joint stability associated with arthritis.

Arthritis is often associated with poor circulation so waste materials and toxins can well up in your knees triggering inflammation and stiffness. Compression sleeves help to improve the circulation gently helping to speed up recovery.

They are a remarkably simple solution if you have had a knee injury, helping to reduce the likelihood of further injury.

Types of Knee Sleeves

It is worth mentioning that the terms Knee Sleeves and Knee Braces often get used to describe sleeves. However, a sleeve is a light, thin fabric that is pulled up and over your knees. A brace, on the other hand, is used to restrict the movement of your knee, in a particular direction.

It is typically used for severe knee injuries, caused by twisting and overextension where the normal “groove” of the knee has been exceeded. Frequently, these are prescribed by a medical professional or therapist.

In this video, we are discussing sleeves rather than braces.

There are several specific uses for knee sleeves.

  1. Warming your knees.

By providing light compression of your knee, they act to warm the knee area. There are many reasons this can be useful. In sports where there is a lot of waiting between competition, these can help to keep the knees more mobile and flexible. Long queues in competitions and waiting for equipment at the Gym spring to mind….

Weightlifters frequently use sleeves for this purpose so that they can lift cleanly even after a long wait.

  1. Supporting your knee joints.

These types of sleeves tend to be thicker and typically use Neoprene between 5mm and 7mm to provide additional resistance. They can help to ensure that the knees stay in alignment and help to give confidence in more extreme movements such as heavy squatting and powerlifting.

It is worth saying that regular use of these sleeves can create a dependency. Often underlying weaknesses should be addressed by refining your alignment, training proper muscle memory, and strengthening the supporting ligaments and tendons. Overuse of a sleeve can make misalignment more difficult to fix.

  1. In some cases, the patella tendon can flick outwards when your knees are subjected to extreme loads. This causes a lot of pain in and behind the kneecap. Patella straps can help with this condition. These are a smaller, specialist form of sleeves.

There are a wide variety of knee sleeves available. It is important to select the one best suited to your circumstances. Make sure to carefully look at the description to check it is a match!

It is also important that the sleeves stay in place. When you have a shortlist, have a read through the reviews to check how other people have got on. These will also give you additional insight.

There is a big problem with fake reviews. My preference is to look for items which have hundreds of reviews. These are much more difficult to fake!

The material they are made from also have a bearing on their suitability. For powerlifting, features like breathability are less important than for a sport where you may sweat a lot over a match

I hope you find these tips from Steve’s Health Answers really useful and please let me know how you get on.
